Shinbun is the Japanese word that means "newspaper."
Newspaper is the word of the thing that my mother must read everyday. It is election results, opinions, book reviews, scientific discoveries, obituaries, news from around the world and in my own backyard. It is the feeling of thin paper, the smearing of ink onto oily hands, the smell of recycled trees. Struggling to keep pages open, finding the comics, the coupons, the movie listings. Newspaper stands and long airplane rides.
What's in a word? Will I ever understand "shinbun" in the same way?
