Beginning!

It is so wonderful to be back to playing music at HPAC.  After my seating audition this afternoon, we had a rehearsal for conductorless string orchestra.  Beginning tomorrow the principal cellist will arrive, but for today, I got to lead the section.  David Kim, the concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra led the orchestra and his friend from Philadelphia led the viola section.  It was really fun to play with them for more than an hour.  And because this rehearsal ended a little earlier than scheduled, our quartet was able to get a coaching with Mr.Kim before the opening reception.  He gave us new colors and ways to approach Ravel, new ideas of time and sound and ensemble playing.  There are few things I enjoy more than quartet coachings and it was such a pleasure to work with him, to hear him play, to bring all his experience and ideas to our musical space.

After the opening reception, our orchestra piled into the train to come home and crammed into one of the public busses, cramming our instruments between the other patrons as politely as possible.  It is such a jovial group, excited to be here and to take in everything they can.  The Japanese members moved in later so I'm still slowly meeting them.  Very exciting to be starting a new year with everyone.
